Origin of the Dental Clinic

Founded 2001, the Lake Area Free Clinic’s core purpose is to “meet the widest range of health care needs of the economically challenged that it is able to support.” Today, Clinic’s support services include primary care, gynecology, cardiology, hepatology, hematology, nephrology, rheumatology, orthopedics, mental health counseling, wellness, physical therapy and diabetes clinics. However, one critical health care need remained unmet: LAFC patients – as well as thousands of other adults in Waukesha County – have very limited access to basic, preventive and acute dental care and education.

After extensive research and discussions to explore options to meet this vital need, the LAFC Dental Task Force in March, 2016 recommended the Clinic move forward with plans to add dental services in the end of 2017. The goal is to provide a dental home for those in need of access to basic dental, educational and referral services in order to minimize the incidence of dental emergencies and threats to patients’ overall health. LAFC dental services would be offered to Medicaid recipients as well as existing Clinic patients and the estimated 35,000+ adults in the County whose incomes do not exceed 200% of the FPL.
