Yarn Gala - 2017
Thanks for visiting our Yarn Gala page!
Our initial idea from this event came from an email that a friend sent about a 92-year-old woman who “yarn bombed” a bike in England. We thought perhaps we could do this in town not only to color the community, but to raise funds for the Lake Area Free Clinic. Things took off from there.
Last year’s projects were not only crafted by over 30 individuals but various knitting groups—including groups from Ben Franklin Crafts, Books & Company, The Knitch, Delafield Library, S&B and Our Saviors Lutheran Church to mention a few. Even the girl scouts got involved (Troop # 2257) in helping to assemble our Title Sponsorship Tree at Fowler Park. We had 175 projects to put up throughout Oconomowoc and 35 people volunteered their time on a rainy Friday night in accomplish this project.
We incorporated our “yarn bombing” to coincide with the Art Festival, Fall Festival and our annual LAFC fundraiser that will be held this year on September 9th at the Olympia Resort. Check out the events tab in this website to get more information on this major fundraiser.
We had a great time working with the people who volunteered their time and talents. Without them, we would not have been able to raise $10,000 from this event for the clinic!
As we were working on the yarn projects last year, it was so wonderful to see and hear strangers stop and read the tags together and talk about how beautiful and creative they were and how they really added some color to the downtown area. If you had an opportunity to see the projects that were displayed around the Oconomowoc area this past summer and would like to get involved, now is the time! We are looking for knitters, loomers and crocheters to craft these projects, as well as organizations, businesses and people to sponsor them!
We will once again be coloring Oconomowoc in August. Yarn will be put up the weekend of August 11-12-13, a week before the Art Festival. But before we do that we need your help in crafting these fine projects. We have a lot of projects available for the taking. All you need to do is contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Or you can call or text Liz at 262-893-9304 or Julie at 262-366-7387.
Thanks! Liz Silkey and Julie Antonneau
